A report in The Guardian said police could be too “desperate” to be willing to press charges, because they believe they don’t have the evidence to do so.
“It is a potentially explosive allegation which is now getting bigger,” said the report by my colleague Karla Adam.
She explained the case is the latest to raise doubts about the effectiveness of the troubled Metropolitan police.
A man has been charged with the murder of Stephen Lawrence, who was fatally stabbed in a racist attack in a south London park in 1993.
Stephen was walking home from school with two friends when he was stabbed, apparently by two men who knew him and thought he was taking part in a fight. He was only 18 years old.
It has been a major public inquiry and two local police forces were found to have been negligent. It ended in 2017, after a judge found there was no evidence to justify a prosecution.
Karla Adam’s report said that up to 35 people could have been involved, but no one has been charged in the two-year public inquiry.
The Guardian report said there had been extensive inquiries but no other arrests, and said the investigation team “appears to have become fixated on hunting a scapegoat”.
The report said: “The police may be too desperate to be willing to press charges because they lack the evidence needed to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt.”
The family and friends of Stephen are strongly dissatisfied with the police, and the report added: “The police have not produced any witnesses, including any of the attackers, that have contradicted the police version of events.”
In April, a royal-commissioned report by a barrister said that attempts to tackle the problems of violence against young black men had been hampered by “the failure of the police to recognise the phenomenon as a priority”.
